Driveshaft U-Joints Accident Repair Accident Remote Start Install |
Over christmas break, my g/f wrecked her truck. She spun out on some ice, and hit a tree.
She hit it almost square to the tree; it buckled the hood and cracked the windshield. I took the tires in to be remounted and the rims were fine.
After a little bit of work, I got the hood open. A couple of bent brackets, and one severed vacuum was the only underhood damage. The fan shroud was also busted, but that may have been from previous accidents.
Since we were looking for sheetmetal, I decided that I might as well replace the rusted passenger fender too.
I stripped the front end of the truck down (which required cutting the driver side fender off), and started finding parts.
The inner fender also was damaged. I found a used hood, and a brand new repop passenger side fender at the junkyard. I also found a driver side fender in decent shape.
However, the driver fender would not clear the door even when shimmed - it came right back off. I then drove the truck about 30 miles to the frame shop; it came back clean with no frame damage.
We have found my g/f a beater for the time being - a 92 S10. It came with a brand new GM driver side fender, so I will be using that. It seems the control arms have been bent as well as the steering knuckle, so I have found replacement pieces. It also shoved the front differential over far enough to crack the alumninum fly wheel cover, and broke one of the mounting bosses on the front differential. I've found all the replacement peices except a front differential, but I think I can wing it without replacing it. I will have more pics once it gets warm enough to fix it. Over spring break I started to dismantle it further to finish fixing the damage. I pulled out the driveshaft and replaced the aluminum flywheel cover since it was cracked.
I then started on the suspension. I have enough to replace the entire thing, but I'm going to try to replace just the upper control arm and see if I can get an alignment done on it.
This is what I found out when I seperated the balljoints. Seems to have taken most of the impact, although the upper arm is quite bent in comparison as well. You can see where the rust flaked off is where the stress was on the arm; needless to say, it's all over
